Under the street tree

The street tree is a study of observations of street trees. The traces on the crown, trunk and roots reflect the interaction and mutual influence between people and trees, and also reflect the state of creatures in the city.

During a month of observation and research on street trees in London, I focused on the London plane (Platanus ×acerifolia (Aiton) Willd.), the most planted street tree in London
What are street trees? What does their existence mean to humans? Although street trees coexist with human beings in the city, we do not treat these as individuals. In particular, the London Plane, which was artificially cultivated in the 17th century.

What we need is not the whole nature of the street tree but the part that we can use, making its nature a tool of service to humankind. Whenever I see these trees standing among buildings, vehicles, and pedestrians on the street, I feel they look like a row of silent workers.

Contract with street trees
Work is a limitation, we sell our innate creativity and physical strength to make what the employers need in exchange for money to survive, which is Principles of Survival of the human world. But looking at trees from an "Occupation" perspective is a distortion of the value of life.

The contract signing ceremony reinforces the above concept, clearly pointing out the labour and "salary" that trees pay for the city under human labour laws, highlighting the situation in which the trees in the city are deprived of the right to grow freely, and even to live and die.

The ceremony will be held in White City, which will invite the audience to come here to witness the signing of these contracts. This performance aims to clarify the duties and responsibilities of the street trees, making the audience rethink the relationship between humans and other beings.
